Some of these debt counseling programs are scams, they charge you a monthly fee to pay your bills for you. They are suppose to negotiate with the companies you owe money to and you pay one lump sum, this is good in some cases but you have to go with a legitimate company, Some say they are nonprofits, but that does not mean anything, so please beware. Some companies will go through all the paper work and take your money and not pay the bills, but keep all of your money. The person that wrote about getting out of debt is correct, but maybe there are other alternatives, like bankruptcy, debt consolidation, or negotiating with your creditors.

There are many churches and organizations that are gearing up to deliver Christmas food baskets to need families and toys for tots can help as well. Check with the local food bank. This will take some calling around, but once she gets her story out there folks will probably help her.
